Preparation Exercises

1. Examine your most recent job description and, honestly and accurately, write down:

•

your most important duty or function
• save money/time
• the skills required to perform this
• your most significant accomplishment in this area

(Conservatively) estimate what contribution this made to the company in commercial or staff terms, especially where it:

•

reduced administration
• avoided expenditure
• increased sales/revenue

Repeat this exercise for other key duties and any other relevant job descriptions you might have.

2. Imagine you had the opportunity to negotiate your next salary increase with your boss. He or she is financially astute and therefore expects a valuable contribution from his/her staff. Your “worth” to the business is therefore scrutinised. On paper

•

quickly outline the main points you want to discuss
• detail why these are of value to the company

3. Think of the various job related tasks you have had to perform in the last few years. List:

•

how you approached the tasks
• what skills you had to use
• how you analysed what was required
• how you achieved your objectives
• what the outcome was for you and your company
• how the business benefited from what you did.

4. List down all job related innovations you have carried out yourself and any areas in which you have been especially proactive, even novel

5. Over your entire career, identify your greatest achievement or most significant project in which you played a major role, in terms of:

•

Efficiency
• Savings
• Increased output/sales
• Procedures and Systems
• Leadership
• Teamwork

6. Turnings things around, what tasks have you done which were essential to the well being of the company without which there would be serious problems or disruption. In other words, to what extent are you indispensable? In examining this question, look for areas of consistency in your work.

Once you have completed all this hard work you, you will have provided the basis from which your CV can be “knocked into shape”. You now have to choose the appropriate CV format from several possibilities.
